Third Grade

Third Grade is the transition between lower and upper elementary.  Children continue to refine the skills that have been presented in previous years and are able to integrate, organize and express these skills so that they may be used as effective learning tools.  Third Graders explore the process of thinking and individual learning strategies so the notion of taking responsibility for their own learning is firmly established.

At the start of the school year, Third Graders are given the opportunity to offer subjects they are interested in - for example frogs or wizards - to the group and throughout the year, these topics are thoroughly examine in all curricular areas.

Mulberry School 3rd Grade Frogs

One year, Third Grade had "gone to the birds" in that the entire curriculum was integrated with nature and birds. Students read about birds, wrote about birds, did science fair projects on birds, drew and silk painted birds and made ceramic birds!

Third Graders read for information and content and present their findings in research projects. They practice reading with expression in small groups and explore genre, point of view, and poetry in depth.

What 3rd Grade Alumni Say

"Hi Judy,

....The reason why I am writing you this quick note is to let you know how much of a positive impact you have had on my life. I did an interview for the STYLE network and they asked me who inspired me the most in my life. You were the first person that came to my mind other than my mother. I wanted to thank you for helping shape my soul, and giving me the strength to believe in who I was. Despite my dyslexia, you took the time to teach me to love school and think creatively. I learned to love animals, the rainforest, bright colors, the smell of coffee in the morning, funky art, the beach and realising it was "ok" not to follow all the rules all the time. Even today, I still love and listen to the B52s because of you. You were my idol, my most important influence in life as a child. Because of the time you spent loving, nurturing and believing in me I have grown to know myself well, think outside the box and most importantly love and laugh through life even when I make mistakes...."
